Brisingr Chapters 20-50

As you can probably tell by the title this past week I have been reading nonstop. I’ve read over three hundred pages of Brisingr in the past week and now I’m only 7 chapters from finishing. As there isn’t enough time or room to tell you everything that happened I’ll give you the quick rundown. As I recall I left you with Eragon leaving Jerod’s tent. Well after that he went to get a sword eventually deciding on a sort of thin scimitar. He puts it into use right away as Thorn and Murtagh along with 300 soldiers attack the Varden. Eragon beats Murtagh (only with the help of his 11 elf bodyguards) and tells him how he could possibly free himself from Galbatorix. The soldiers prove to be a big problem, they can’t feel pain. Eventually they are all killed though. Next we have Roran’s and Katrina’s wedding. Then Eragon is sent to the dwarf’s city to oversee the election of a new king. Meanwhile Roran serves as a fighter to prove he has the capabilities of a leader. The next few chapters switch between Roran and Eragon so I will give you Roran’s story first and then Eragon’s. Roran is sent on a mission to destroy a supply caravan. They end up fighting the soldiers without pain and it’s only by Roran’s quick thinking that they don’t lose more than they did. Nasuada sends him on another such mission but with a different stricter leader. This mission is to recapture a city taken by soldiers. However the empire is ready with crossbows and takes many casualties very quickly. To save the few men under his command Roran has to disobey orders. This eventually helps him save the captain from being killed. The captain gives him new orders and is displeased that Roran disobeyed. However he must again ignore orders in order to save everyone’s lives. He kills 193 by himself but is punished with insubordination. He is sentenced to 50 lashings even though he saved the mission and everyone’s lives. After wards though he is made captain of a band of 20 Urgals and 20 men to try and show that they can work together (due to an incident earlier where a man in the Varden killed 3 Urgals in their sleep). The mission goes easily with no deaths and only 3 injuries. However one of the Urgal challenges Roran to a fight to prove his worth as leader. Roran accepts and eventually forces the Urgal into submission. Now for Eragon. This is reall long so I’m gonna make it super short. New dwarf king is needed who supports the Varden, hopefully Orik (Eragon’s foster bro), someone tries to kill Eragon with assassins, his sword breaks, the man who hired them is banished, Orik is elected new dwarf king. Then Eragon heads to the elf’s city for further teaching from his master. His master then reveals to him that Brom was his Father not Morzan, which also means Murtagh is only his half-brother. Also he finds some brightsteel (asteroid rock) that can be made into a new Dragon Rider sword just for him. AND THAT IS HOW IT ENDS!

Brisngr Chapter 19

In chapter 19 Saphira goes on a hunting trip and Eragon goes to take care of some personal business. First he goes to the blacksmith from his home town and asks were he could find Gedric the tanner. The blacksmith tells him were to go and Eragon heads out. He finds Gedic practicing swordsmanship and asks the drill instructor if he could talk to Gedic. When he comes over Eragon tells him that years ago he had stolen Gedic’s leather to make a saddle. He then pays Gedic with a large ball of gold. He at first says he can’t except it but eventually does. Then Eragon goes to meet with a man named Jeod who was of of the original people to hide Saphira’s egg. He had promised Jeod to tell him how Brom had died. Jeod then gives Eragon a book and the chapter ends with Eragon leaving the tent.

Chapter 18

The next chapter called “Making Amends” is next. In this chapter Eragon goes to cure Elva. Elva is a very young girl who Eragon blessed when she was first born. However he had messed up the wording and it gave her the power to see others weakness and the desire to help. Eragon had gone to try and remove the blessing. There were to options, he could either try to remove the spell altogether or he could create a spell to counter the blessing. He chose the second one because it was much easier and much less dangerous. After he had cast the new spell Elva said that it had not worked, even though the desire to help was gone she could still feel the pain. As Eragon began to try and put together a new spell Elva stopped him. She told him she could block out the pain now that the desire was gone and she went on about how she could use this for her own personal gain. Eragon and Saphira both decided it would be unwise to keep her in this state and he was about to say the spell when Elva stopped him again. She outwitted him with words because she could see what hurt him. She then left the tent and that is how the chapter ends.

Chapter 17

Well here we go again. In chapter 17 “Intersecting sagas” we see Eragon on his way to meet with Nasuada. On his way a man asks him to heal his wife of a tumor. He does and then continues on his way. He then meets with Angela who has just finished telling the fortune of two women. She asks him to bless them and he does. They then walk together to Nasuada’s tent. On the way Angela asks Eragon about what happened to him on his way back to the varden. So he tells her about an old crazy hermit he found living in an abandoned tower named Tenga. She stops suddenly and reveals that at one point she was Tenga’s assistant. Then the chapter ends with them walking into the tent.

Chapters 14-16

I read three chapters again this week. I guess I’ll just get right down to it then, chapter 14 was when Eragon and Arya finally returned to the Varden. His 12 elf body guards come to meet him and everyones yelling stuff like hi shadeslayer and stuff like that. Oh and some lady yells “Will you marry me?” . Anyway eventually Roran and Katrina pushed their way through the crowd and greeted him. Basically it was a lot of greetings. Eragon, Arya, and Saphira werethen invited to Nasuada’s tent to catch up and stuff. However there were lots of people there who also greeted Eragon. And as one group of people left another group came in. Eventually Saphira had to growl to get them to leave. The main thing Nasuada and King Orrin wanted to know is what really happened at Helgrind. Before he can say though Orrin and Nasuada get into an argument about how they have equal power and stuff -.- sigh. Eventually they come to an agreement and Eragon tells them exactly what happened. Then after everyone has left besides Eragon and Nasuada she invites him to a dinner later for political stuff. As Eragon goes to get all dressed up and clean he does a little thinking about Murtagh’s old sword which he keeps under his cot. Eventually he decides he shouldn’t use it and puts it away. When Eragon arrives at the dinner he is surprised that it is filled with his friends (a gift from Nasuada). Eragon enjoys himself and the food. During the party Roran asks Eragon to marry him and Katrina. So Eragon suggests the ceremony be conducted in a month or so. Roran says however it can’t wait or else everyone would be gossiping, I honestly laughed at that part (if you don’t get it you fail). Anyway later he also talks with Nasuada again and she gives him the next two days off to relax. bye

Chapters 11-13

This week I read three chapters…whoa…so yeah I guess I made up for the one chapter over break. These chapters were pretty boring though, with only one thing of interest happening in each one. Other than that it was just a bunch of unimportant filler. The interesting thing in chapter 11 was that the elfish mages sent to protect Eragon arrived. Oh yeah this chapter is from Nasuada’s point of view. Anyway some other unimportant things were that the main elf looked like a werewolf and one of Nasuada’s guards talked with her about a motto. Chapter 12 was back with Eragon and Arya. All they really do in this chapter is walk along the road. Until some soldiers stop them and try to force them into the army. I will now account the deaths of the soldiers as this was the most interesting part of all three chapters. Eragon killed the first guy by throwing a pebble denting the helmet and skull of the soldier. Then he grabbed one of the soldier’s spears and killed that guy to. Meanwhile Arya is just kicking/kneeing other soldiers and killing them. Then 4 of the remaining soldiers rush Eragon, he twists around the first guy and slashes him with his own sword, he breaks the necks of the next two, and finally punches a guy right in his chest so hard he flies back 12 feet with a big dent in his armor. At this time Arya is still fighting two soldiers and one is making a run for it. Eragon runs after him and the whole way the guy is begging Eragon not to kill him. However Eragon catches him and strangles him. Then he and Arya stab the dead soldiers so it looks like a battle between soldiers not an elf and a dragon rider just punching people. They decide not to walk on the road anymore. Chapter 13: probably the most boring of the three, Eragon and Arya are sitting around their campfire with Eragon wining about being uncomfortable with killing people and asking Arya lots of questions. He makes her a flower with magic and she is all happy and stuff and she plants it in the ground. Eventually some glowing orb things show up and the touch them and its all happy. By the way the orbs are spirits. Oh and they turn the flower Eragon made into a gold flower with diamonds on it that is still alive. That’s how it ends…
